The essentials The Andorra Chamber of Commerce presented the project to create an international airport. Located 10 km from the border with France near Pas-de-la-Case, the hotel is announced for 2026. Andorra has 500,000 passengers a year.
Andorra is one of the few countries in the world that does not have an airport. To get on the plane, Andorrans must travel to Toulouse or Barcelona or, to a lesser extent, to the small Seu d’Urgell airport in Catalonia.
Having its own airport: the dream is finally becoming a reality for the principality. The project to create an international airport, which has been studied for several years, has just been presented by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Andorra la Vella. The opening to the public will be announced in 2026.
An airport near France
The selected location is on Pla d’Envalira between Grau Roig and Soldeu, two areas of the Grandvalira ski area. It is about ten kilometers from Pas-de-la-Case and thus from the border with France. The airport would be on the side of the road connecting Pas-de-la-Casa to Andorra la Vella.
Andorra International Airport is at an altitude of 2000 meters and has a 1800 meters long and 45 meters wide runway. It would be accompanied by covered parking. The chosen location, which is protected from the prevailing wind and the risk of avalanches, would allow the airport to be open all year round despite the often harsh weather in Andorra. The location can accommodate Airbus A320 or Boeing 737.
“Why should you rob yourself of an international airport?” Asks Ramon Ginesta of the Chamber of Commerce, interviewed by France Bleu Roussillon. Ten years ago we could not consider this airport in Andorra because the GPS guidance systems did not exist. In our mountains it was impossible to land large planes. Well, that’s no longer a problem. ”
The studies were carried out by Navblue, an Airbus air traffic management solutions company based in Blagnac and CGX Aero in Castres. These companies “certified the feasibility of the construction,” explains the daily Diari Andorra.
500,000 passengers expected
Only the road allows you to go to Andorra. Andorra hopes to attract 500,000 passengers annually from all over the world with this airport project. Regular lines are announced with France, England or Spain and in winter with Russia or Qatar. The Andorrans therefore cannot imagine a parade of flights from low-cost companies. The airport should make it possible “to advance the economic transformation of Andorra and to achieve solid economic growth”, explains the Chamber of Commerce. The principality suffers from the “current economic model, the dependence on local tourism and the low economic diversification”. With an airport, Andorra wants to attract companies with high added value.
A budget of 345 million
The airport is expected to cost 345 million euros. The state should finance part of it. The project should also be funded by international companies that have expressed an interest in managing the Andorra Airport concession. According to the daily Diari Andorra, six to eight groups would be interested. The total cost of the project will be borne by “various private investors” who have already shown interest, “the President of the Chamber of Commerce, Miquel Armengol, told the daily El Periodic Andorra. The presented project has yet to receive numerous approvals.
The environment is a priority
When presenting the airport project, the Chamber of Commerce insists on the environmental impact. Studies on fauna, flora and natural inhabitants are announced. “Various measures to compensate for the natural environment”, the replanting of trees, the relocation and maintenance of wetlands in the heart of the Pyrenees are planned.
