There is a real hope that comes to us from Israel! A 78-year-old man could benefit from the first artificial corneal transplant … And so he was able to recognize his loved ones and improve his eyesight significantly.
According to the WHO, corneal disease is the third most common cause of blindness worldwide. Two million new cases occur every year. Up until now it has been very difficult to replace damaged or deformed corneas. Doctors at Beilinson Hospital achieved this feat thanks to the CorNeat KPro artificial cornea. The patient’s eyes were badly damaged, but the transplant was a success!
The artificial cornea CorNeat KPro integrates perfectly into the eye wall. But it doesn’t depend on the donor’s tissue. While the man had gone through several surgeries, none had been convincing. The man had lost his sight ten years ago. He still managed to distinguish fuzzy shapes, but couldn’t see those around him.
After the operation, the man immediately regained his eyesight. He could see the hand that was being shown to him, numbers of different sizes…. But above all to see his daughter, whom he had not “seen” for ten years!

Professor Irit Bahar, director of the Rabin Eye Clinic, is behind this operation. He claims that the transplant is a fairly simple operation, but that the result exceeds anything he expected!
Since June 2020, the cornea CorNeat KPro has been approved through clinical studies on 10 patients. However, this is the first time it has been transplanted into a patient who has not participated in clinical trials. An achievement, of course, but above all a real hope for all visually impaired people!
