Schumann resonances are a series of spectral peaks in the extremely low frequency range of the earth’s magnetic field that some scientists believe could affect the behavior of humans and animals.
Certain theories (without a scientific basis) actually state that an increase in these resonance frequencies could affect all of humanity and “cause a worldwide increase in fear, tension and / or passion,” explains the engineering site of interest. Although these ideas are not based on serious scientific research, we do not yet know what effects these electromagnetic fields could have on humans and fauna.
Discovered in the 1950s
Schumann resonances consist of electromagnetic waves of natural origin at very low frequencies. These waves circulate above the earth under the ionosphere. This may sound silly to some of us, but the Schumann Resonance is indeed one of the natural phenomena that hit our world.
It owes its name to the German physicist Winfried Otto Schumann, who first described it in 1952. The phenomenon was demonstrated in the 1960s. To this end, the scientists analyzed almost 2,000 thunderstorms, which generated around 50 lightning bolts per second in the four corners of the world.
Low frequency waves around 7.8 Hz
The electromagnetic waves associated with the Schumann resonance range between 3 and 30 Hz. The main mode has a wavelength equal to the circumference of the earth and a frequency of 7.83 Hz. This frequency has been known as “the beating of the earth’s heartbeat”.

According to Big Think reports, progressively lower harmonics were measured at around 14.3, 20.8, 27.3, and 33.8 Hz. Of course, water and oxygen are the main building blocks of life, but more and more reports are suggesting that a steady regime of geomagnetic resonances is required to live comfortably and healthily.
Consequences for health and behavior?
For example, a study published in 2006 suggests that lightning frequencies can be linked to different types of brain waves. The researchers succeeded in demonstrating “real-time coherence between the variations of the Schumann spectrum and the spectra of brain activity in the range of 6-16 Hz”.
In 2016, experts from the Behavioral Neuroscience Laboratory at Laurentian University in Canada published an article on the same topic. In it they claim to have discovered “unexpected similarities in the spectral models and the strength of the electromagnetic fields generated by the human brain and the earth’s ionosphere” after three and a half years of observation.
Others claim that the Schumann resonance has an impact on human growth hormones. Some people also associate it with hypnosis and meditation, but as our source notes, there is currently no scientific evidence to support these associations.
